It is about the elderly person whose chronic bronchitis is aggravated by another smoggy day. It is about the unseen damage to the lung tissue of every single person living downwind. The company’s actions contribute to a toxic atmospheric soup that causes real, measurable harm. The fine they paid does not cover a single inhaler, a single emergency room co-pay, or a single moment of a parent’s panic as their child struggles to breathe.
They sold a product whose only purpose is to break the law and pollute. The settlement of $5,293 is an insult. It’s the cost of doing business, not a penalty.
